This guide serves as a basic starting point to find key resources for studying and researching dance and related subjects at Northern Kentucky University.

Scholarly journals, Periodicals, and Conference Proceedings

American Journal of Dance Therapy 

  • The official journal of the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA).
  • Reports the latest findings in dance/movement therapy theory, research, and clinical practice.
  • Presents original contributions, case material, reviews, and studies by leading educators and practitioners in the field.
  • Examines new populations, changing goals, innovative techniques, and new methods of training as well as current professional issues, outcome research, and assessment tools.

Dance Chronicle 

  • For dance scholars, professors, practitioners, and aficionados
  • Indispensable for keeping up with the rapidly changing field of dance studies. 
  • Publishes research on a wide variety of Western and non-Western forms, including classical, avant-garde, and popular genres, often in connection with the related arts: music, literature, visual arts, theatre, and film.
  • Encompasses research rooted in humanities-based paradigms: historical, theoretical, aesthetic, ethnographic, and multi-modal inquiries into dance as art and/or cultural practice.

Dance Research Journal 

  • The longest running, peer reviewed journal in the dance field
  • Carries scholarly articles, book reviews, and a list of books and journals received.

Dance Research: The Journal of the Society for Dance Research 

  • Covers dance worldwide both from a historical and contemporary perspective, engaging with current debates on dance and across cognate disciplines with dance at the centre of inquiry. 

Journal of Dance Education

  • The official publication of the National Dance Education Organization.
  • Presents the latest developments in dance education research and practice with the intent of assisting educators in their quest to remain current in the classroom.
  • Provides both scholarly and practical articles relevant to various populations within the dance community, including public schools K-12, private schools, private studios, higher education, and community education.
  • Topics within the journal include but are not limited to: training of dancers, curriculum, pedagogy, teaching methodology, best practices, standards, assessment, dance administration, collaboration, creativity, dance advocacy and social justice issues.

Dance Index (01/01/1942 - 12/31/1948)

  • Original scholarship on a wide range of dance subjects
  • Dance Index was revived in 2017 but is not accessible through Steely. Please use interlibrary loan to request articles from the new Dance Index.

Conversations Across the Field of Dance Studies

  • An annual publication of Dance Studies Association dedicated to current themes and debates in the field of dance studies.
  • Each issue is edited by (a) different guest editor(s) and is published online in an open access format. As such, Conversations is a venue in which scholars, artists, and educators of dance and related disciplines can respond quickly and publicly to current events and pressing issues as identified by members of an international dance studies community.
  • Publishes a range of formats, such as think pieces, scholarly dialogues, practitioner critical reflections, photo and video essays, poetic reveries, reports from the field, ethnographic considerations, introductions to archival repositories, theoretical provocations, interviews, proceedings from important recent roundtables, and more.
  • While DSA makes pdf versions of Conversations freely available as a service to the field, print and digital versions of the publication are a benefit of membership.

The International Journal of Screendance

  • Open Access Journal
  • An international, artist-led journal exploring the field of Screendance.

Journal of Dance Medicine and Science

  • Suitable for healthcare professionals and for dance science and medicine researchers and academics.
  • Original articles with a focus on the identification, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of illness and injuries in dancers.
  • Articles emphasize the application of scientific principles to current practice.
  • Each issue focuses on bringing you the current results of clinical and experimental research.

Popular Magazines

Dance International

  • Devoted to covering a wide spectrum of contemporary and classical dance from Canada and around the world.
  • Provides in-depth features, reviews and reports by established and emerging writers
  • As of January 2020, it became a web-only platform, still proudly published by the Vancouver Ballet Society.

Dance Magazine 

Pointe Magazine

  • Dedicated exclusively to the world of ballet.
  • Provides training and career advice, health and wellness tips, and behind-the-scenes interviews with stars.
